Makinano dominates Argao Open Active Chess

-
Former Palaro champion Anthony Makinano lost in his final round match, but it did not stop him from dominating the Argao Open Active Chess Tournament last Sunday.

Makinano's defeat to Eden Diano in the seventh round created a four-way tie with NM Elwin Retanal and Harold Diano, who also finished with 6.5 points.

But Makinano went on to claim the championship with a superior 23.5 tie-break points.

Retanal, who hurdled Rodrigo Alejandro in his last assignment, landed at second place, while Harold Diano and Eden Diano copped the third and fourth place honors, respectively.

Voltaire Sevillano wound up fifth with 5.5 points, while Richard Natividad was sixth.

Rodrigo Alejandre, Kim Steven Yap, Carlos Moreno III, William Retanal, Jr. completed the top 10 finishers.

Shell Active Chess Cebu leg kiddies champion Yves Fiel was named as the best scorer in the kiddies division, while Sofia Balite and Venancio Loyola bagged the awards in the ladies and high school category.

The tournament, sponsored by the Argao Sports Commission, was supported by Argao Mayor Wilfredo Caminero and Kristel Mountain Water. - Sona Mae V. Povadora
