Secondary division defending champion University of the Visayas (UV) started its title retention bid with a convincing 2-0 mark over the University of San Carlos (USC) in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) lawn tennis event at Alta Vista Golf and Country Club.
One of Milo Little Olympics Most Outstanding Athletes, Francis Largo set up the fire for UV, winning the first singles at 8-1 victory over Eric Pepito of USC.
In the doubles, UV continued to pounce on with Largo and Ryan Repunte posting an 8-1 win over Lloyd Cañete and John Paul Cabahug to seal their win.
On the other hand, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) defeated the University of Cebu (UC), 2-0.
Jade Labaya defeated Mark Juarez as Jayvee Canoy and April Joy Ledesma overpowered Jeston Espinosa and Dandreb Peteros, 8-2, to grab the win.
In the distaff side, USJ-R escaped defeat against UC, 2-1.
In the singles, Lovelie Soquino upset USJ-R's Jin Querubin, 8-4, but Quirubin along with Glenna Lambayan managed to hold on after winning against Soquino and Veronica Baron in the doubles, 8-3.
In the deciding match, Genalyn Bohol outplayed Jeason Secong, 8-2, to grab the win for USJ-R.
In the other action, USC survived another thrilling match opposite UV with another 2-1 mark.
Claire Cortes won over Sheena Mari Pabo with an 8-2 score.
However, the tandem of UV's Julie Ann Jopia and Pabo blended well and staged an upset win over Sallydine Siso and Christel Mae Buenacosa, 8-5, to forget a decider.
UV's opportunity to win went down the drain however, with its bet, Tanya Jakosalem losing to USC's Kimberly Tresser via default.
At the start of the tertiary battle, the men's singles saw USC's Jerry Juyo-a slapping Jedree Tan of USJ-R in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Juyu-a's teammate, Trina Tizon, for her part, won against UV's Riza Rana at 6-2, 6-4 to lead the cast.
