Gabby Aboitiz lifts CIS over Bright Academy

Gabby Aboitiz put up a one-man show by leading Cebu International School (CIS) to a ferocious 5-0 rout of gainst Bright Academy to pluck the girls 12-under tiara even as its counterpart snagged the girls 17 title in the kick off of the 9th Aboitiz Football Cup at the University of San Carlos Technology field.

But even before Aboitiz could make a score she was handed with a yellow card after protesting a call.

However, her succeeding goals at the turn was more than enough to overshadow the yellow card when she banged immediately after the turn and made a follow-up through a free kick three minutes after.

Aboitiz' savvy put CIS already at the comfort zone by hitting the last two shots to wrap up the match.

Her sterling performance, however, did not earn her the MVP award as it went to her teammate Christelle Dychangco.

On the other hand, it was a nerve-wrecking championship battle between CIS and Siliman University in the girls-17 class that sent the game to a 2-1 shootout.

Mara Reina of CIS could have saved them from the shootout when she missed her chance during a free kick.

Excellent goal keeping job of Corina Bruce kept the CIS spirit alive and the spectators wild after a strong threat from the visitors when she staved off two close attempts.

In the shoot-out, Bruce held Siliman scoreless while Monica Moraza put CIS ahead after slipping past Siliman keeper Corina Olegario.

Siliman, though, tied the count after Bruce miscalculated the ball in the second attempt.

However, the model-athlete Mara Reina sent CIS in jubilation when she sneaked in their winning shot.

On the other hand, Don Bosco Technological Center whacked Springdale, 3-0, in the boys 10-under.

MVP awardee Peter Diaz broke the ice at the half. Valentin Calvo headed the ball towards the goal to put them ahead by 2-0 before a corner kick made by Jun-jay Arizabal.

But, Springdale bounced back in the players-8 as they exacted vengeance against DBTC with a 3-1 defeat.

Today, the games to be contested are players 6, boys 12, 14 and 17.
