For the fourth consecutive year, the Blue Eagles bagged the overall title of the Ateneo-La Salle Golf Tournament, which was played Wednesday and Thursday at the par-72 Cebu Country Club.
When the smoke of the friendly battle cleared, Ateneo, which has a huge manpower advantage came up with a commanding 119-61 victory over La Salle in the two-day event using the Blind Callaway Handicapping Format.
Each team earned points depending on the placing of its players in the net and gross standings of five age categories with the champions getting 10 points, first runner-up 5 and second runner-up 3.
Lawyer Jovi Neri of Ateneo bagged the lowest gross honors for the 29 and under age category shooting two-over-par 74 strokes. Marc Gonzalez of La Salle was the first runner-up with 79 and Blake Go of Ateneo was the second runner-up with 89.
William Hong, who will be graduating next month from his Civil Engineering course in La Salle, topped the battle for the lowest net honors with a score of 73 strokes. Ateneo's Calvin Gothong was second while third place went to Jude Demiar of La Salle.
The tournament format allowed the players to win only once, but were given the prize that would give their team the most points.
In the 30 to 39 age bracket, Toby Florendo led an Ateneo sweep in the battle for gross score honors with his 74. Finishing second and third were Dustin Morada and Wayne Congmon.
Dr. Tony San Juan saved the day for La Salle in the net category as he shot 74 and edged Dominic Hing of Ateneo for the top plum. Third place went to Michael Dino of La Salle.
Chris Infante, who came all the way from Bacolod to carry La Salle's banner, shot his way to the top of the heap in the battle for lowest gross in the 40 to 49 category shooting 75 strokes. Ateneo's Cristino Lim and Manolet Heredia finished second and third with 79 and 81 strokes respectively.
Joy Siguan was the lone lady winner as she ruled the net score category of the 40 to 49 age group. Ateneo's Henry Chu and Raul Encarnacion were second and third respectively.
The best performance in the tournament came in the 50 to 59 years class as Poch Lamug of Ateneo shot a gross even-par 72 strokes to win the title. Kenneth Ngo of La Salle was second while Efren Sarmiento of Ateneo was third.
Iggy Clavecilla led an Ateneo sweep in the net score category as he was followed by Jack Huang and Tony Pineda.
It was again an almost all-Ateneo show in the 60 years and above class as Reny Sarmiento topped the gross scorers with 76. Second place went to La Salle's Tito Adad while Bugs Unchuan of Ateneo was third.
Ateneo swept all the net honors with lawyer Julious Neri. Sr. leading the winners that also included second placer Ed Misa and third placer Ricarte Santos.
Dr. Guillermo Blanco, who at 76 years old was the most senior participant, was given a special prize.
Next year, La Salle will be hosting the tournament and hopes to stop the streak of the Blue Eagles. In the end, the La Sallians however said that what mattered more was their team's victory in the UAAP basketball wars more than the golf tournament for the alumni.
The awards ceremony of the tournament was held at Teatro Casino inside Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
