Evergreen Lancers reach golden mark

Four-time champion University of the Visayas Green Lancers chalked up their 50th straight victory in as many games with a 93-58 thrashing of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers, 93-58, in the 5th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball event the other night at the Brgy. Pardo gym.

Earlier, the Baby Lancers finished off the Baby Panthers, 72-58, after rain stopped their tussle last weekend with UV leading, 53-48, with 5:05 left in the third period.
The Lancers, now strutting a 4-0 win-loss card this season, were flawless in their offensive stance as they set another record for limiting the Panthers to only two points in the entire third period behind a horrendous 24-2 scoring.
From a 50-40 halftime count, the Lancers who earlier trailed, 31-33, blew the Panthers up by exploding in the remaining minutes of the third period to take a 74-42 lead.
With Ariel Mepaña, Rino Berame and Randy Sevilla dominating the boards, the Lancers easily scored transition baskets.
Morskie Akad scored 10 points in the first period while Mark Ababon scored another 10 points in the second period. Both also finished with 17 points even as Mepaña finished with 15 points and Jaysar Esperat added 12.
Elvis Labares and Arletroy Mercader paced the Panthers with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, Patrick Avila scored 28 points to lead the Baby Lancers while Edrian Lao finished with 16 points.
Dennis Ferraren topscored for the Baby Panthers with 24 points.
The Baby Lancers are now back into the top of the standings with a 4-1 win-loss record while the Baby Panthers fell to 3-2 from an impressive 3-0 start.
