Filipina makes waves in US track and field

A 16-year old Cebuana is hugging the limelight in the track and field community in the United States.

If given the chance, Lara Jane Que can be the heir apparent to the throne of multi-awarded RP veteran track and field jock Elma Muros-Posadas, as she already broke two school hurdle records.

Last may, Que clocked an impressive 14.70 seconds in the 100m hurdles during their school meet which is enough to break the record of 15.0 set by Sheryl van der Schyff in 1988.

But she improved her clocking in the same event to 14.60 seconds, which is way better than the time of 14.90 seconds made by Muros-Posadas when she won the gold medal in the 2005 National Track and Field Open Championship at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex early this year.

In the Dartmonth Invitational Meet, she set a record in the 55-meter indoor hurdle with a time of 8.60 seconds.

Born to Euloguio Que and June Delgado, Lara is here in the Cebu for a vacation and Team Cebu City-Athletics coach Precing Capangpangan is helping her with her regimens since she arrived last July 28.

"She has the potential to hit it big because she has the discipline and determination," said Capangpangan, who is also trying to negotiate with the Cebu City Sports Commission for Que's possible stint in the coming Hawaii International Youth Goodwill Games which will be held in July.

Chairman Jonathan Guardo of the CCSC, for his part, is open to the idea but he is requesting for a hard copy to evaluate her qualifications and for the CCSC to deliberate.

"I would want to compete for the Philippines if it won't interfere with my studies in the US," Que said who is holding a dual citizenship. - With Iste Sesante
