Quiñones rules 2nd Southern Leyte tennis event

Michael Quiñones of Team Cebu City-tennis made mincemeat of Manila-based Cebuano Jaime Solon to capture the men's single title in the 2nd Southern Leyte Unity Cup Tennis Tournament yesterday in Maasin City, Leyte.

The feat earned Quiñones the championship crown and the cash prize of P20,000 while Solon won P10,000.

Quiñones, down in the first set, 3-6, fought gallantly and took the second set, 6-0, to level the match 1-1.

In the deciding set, Solon suffered a terrible muscle cramp forcing him to retire and concede the match to Quiñones, who was taking the lead, 1-0.

Earlier, Quiñones was engaged a seesaw battle before disposing off fellow Cebuano Janji Soquino of the University of Cebu in the semifinals, 6-3, 3-6, 13-11.

The other side of the court saw Solon booting out another Cebuano Bo Alburo, 7-5, 6-2.

In the men's doubles, Cebuanos are taking the lead with the duo of Christian Tiongo and Soquino slugging out against Fritzgerald "Ilak" Tabura and Alburo in as of press time.

The champion in the doubles event will be taking home P8,000, while the second finisher will get P4,000.

The tournament is sponsored by Congressman Roger Mercado, Governor Rosit Leria and Davis Paints. - Sona Mae V. Povadora
