Capitol debunks statement attributed to Gov. Garcia
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu provincial government has issued a stern warning against fake news peddlers over the fabricated statement of Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia circulating online.
The Capitol through its news portal, Sugbo News, denied the statement attributed to the governor, which said that Garcia is confident that she will win and does not have to worry since the majority of the mayors and congressmen in the province support her.
The Capitol said that while Garcia remained confident “in the unity of the Mayors in Cebu,” the governor did not make such statements.
The fabricated statement also purportedly quoted Garcia as saying “Also the People here, TagaanranaugAyuda, mosunodranadayon."
The Capitol quickly debunked the statement emphasizing the Governor’s stand against giving “ayuda” to the Cebuanos since it cultivates mendicancy.
“In fact, she firmly opposed to a mendicant mentality and the practice of giving ayuda” Sugbo News added.
The Capitol advised the public to be more discerning in their take on social media content especially that even “simple manipulation, even those poorly done, could fool the unsuspecting."
It also warned the public that those found to be spreading false information could be reported to Facebook and the account may be suspended or permanently removed for violation of community guidelines. — (FREEMAN)
