CEBU, Philippines — The 504th KadaugansaMactan was officially launched yesterday, reaffirming its enduring significance in preserving the city's rich cultural and historical heritage.

This year's celebration will feature former senator and world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao taking on the iconic role of DatuLapulapu in the much-anticipated reenactment of the historic Battle of Mactan.

Garry Lao, officer-in-charge of Lapu-Lapu City Tourism, emphasized the event's importance in honoring the city's roots and fostering community pride.

“More than a tribute to DatuLapulapu's bravery, this celebration reminds us of the city's pre-colonial roots, instilling pride, unity, and a deep appreciation for local culture among Oponganons. It also plays a key role in promoting tourism, the arts, and time-honored traditions that keep the city's legacy alive,” Lao said.

The KadaugansaMactan (Victory in Mactan) is an annual commemoration of the historic battle on April 27, 1521, where DatuLapulapu and his warriors repelled Spanish forces led by Ferdinand Magellan.

“This decisive encounter stands as one of the earliest recorded acts of Filipino resistance against foreign conquest, cementing Lapulapu's legacy as the first national hero,” Lao noted.

This year’s theatrical reenactment promises to bring history to life with stunning performances, authentic period costumes, and dramatic storytelling. Alongside Pacquiao, vloggerHabibi will portray Bulakna, while a Belgian model will take on the role of Magellan.

Adding colors to the festivities is the SadsadsaKadaugan, a lively street dance festival featuring dynamic performances from the city’s 30 barangays. Grouped into 10 contingents, participants will showcase energetic street dancing and ritual showdowns, reflecting the city's cultural diversity.

Another major highlight is the KadaugansaMactan: Food, Fashion & Festivities, which celebrates local cuisine, craftsmanship, and creativity. This event aims to highlight the best of Oponganon artistry, flavors, and traditions.

A mini reenactment of the Battle of Mactan will also be held at the Lapu-Lapu City Hall Lobby, offering an intimate and immersive retelling of the historic battle.

Furthermore, the celebration includes the Kadaugan Job Fair, an employment opportunity event connecting job seekers with local businesses and companies. — (FREEMAN)
