CEBU, Philippines — A member of the tourist police put his life on the line to rescue a fisherman struggling in the waters off Brgy. Maravilla, Tabuelan town, Cebu, on March 18, 2025.

According to PRO-7 in their Facebook post, Police Staff Sergeant Junrey Terana and Police Staff Sergeant Reenah Marie Lumbab, detailed as tourist police of the said town under the Tourist Police of the Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO), "demonstrated their unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of fellow citizens, exemplifying the values upheld by the Philippine National Police (PNP)."

According to reports, two fishermen from Sitio Quasi Baybay of the said municipality, were on board a small banca to fish along the town’s seawater.

Unfortunately, due to strong waves, their banca overturned. One of the fishermen swam to the seashore to ask for help, while the other victim was left holding on to the banca.

Moments later, the other fisherman swam toward the shoreline. However, he was later seen floating face down in the water and was unconscious.

The locals sought the help of tourist police patrolling the area.

Terana noticed the distressed fisherman and swam through the strong currents to reach him. He successfully brought the victim to shore and applied CPR.

Shortly after, an ambulance arrived, and the fisherman was rushed to Tuburan District Hospital for medical assistance.

Police Brigadier General Redrico Maranan, PRO-7 regional director, highlighted Terana’s courageous act as a testament to the commitment to saving the lives of both locals and visitors.

Terana’s bravery, Maranan said, underscores the critical role of first responders in emergency situations.

“This act of bravery exemplifies the selflessness of tourist police who put everything on the line to save others, demonstrating the vital importance of their presence in various tourist destinations and areas of responsibility,” said Maranan. — (FREEMAN)
