PNP upgrades firearm licensing system

Mark Ernest Villeza - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) introduced a more secure and efficient firearm licensing system, aiming to improve the registration process for responsible gun owners while strengthening cybersecurity measures.

PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil announced on Sunday that the Firearms and Explosives Office (FEO) had implemented several reforms to streamline the procedure and enhance accessibility.

The move comes after a cyberattack on May 16, 2024, exposed vulnerabilities in the previous system.

In response, the PNP transitioned to a more advanced and fortified platform featuring anti-malware protection, web reputation monitoring, activity tracking, device control, a web application firewall, intrusion prevention, and two-factor authentication through Google Authenticator and email verification.

To improve both security and user convenience, the PNP-FEO, in coordination with the Information and Technology Management Service, is introducing SIM card-based client credentials, regional kiosk installations, integration with the National Police Clearance system, a mobile app, additional e-payment gateways, an expanded notification system, a unified database, and an improved system interface.

“These innovations reflect our commitment to digital transformation and public service excellence,” Marbil said, adding that they want firearm licensing and registration to be both secure and accessible, ensuring faster and safer transactions for the public.

The PNP-FEO said the upgraded system not only enhances the licensing experience but also reinforces national security and public safety by preventing cyber threats and unauthorized access. – Philippine Star News Service/FPL
