Rape suspect falls

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation-7 has arrested a 27-year-old man who reportedly raped his 16-year-old stepdaughter for two years.

The suspect, who works as the driver of a hardware company, ended up in the hospital after he allegedly shot himself in the head with a .22 cal.

It was last Saturday when the NBI-7 received the rape incident report from the grandmother, who is a job-order employee of the NBI-7.

NBI-7 supervising agent Donaver Inesin said that the mother of the victim, who works as masseur, normally goes out of the house as early as 4 A.M. and the alleged rapes happened whenever she was at work.

Inesin added that the pistol the suspect used to shoot himself was the same one he reportedly threatened the victim with.

NBI-7 regional director Rennan Augustus Oliva said that they had to send the suspect to the hospital, after the latter appeared to have shot himself before surrendering.

Oliva said they failed to recover the .22 cal. pistol.

Mao to nga naghikog daw siya og usab gamit ang pisi, unya naputol man sad.

Around 8 A.M. yesterday, the grandmother contacted the NBI-7 operatives saying the suspect went back to their home in Naga City, Cebu, and manifested that he will voluntarily surrender to them after turning himself over to the local police.

He was picked up by the NBI in Barangay Canghambay, Naga City.

NBI director Jaime Santiago personally visited the suspect in the hospital. Since the latter has no money to spend for his recuperation and operation, the NBI will be the one spending for it out of humanitarian reasons.

The child victim is now under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development-7.

NBI Violence Against Women and Children Division chief Yehlyn Agus urged those who are victims of abuse to contact their office for assistance. (CEBU NEWS)
