Senate OKs three-year fixed term for PCG chief
MANILA, Philippines — The Senate has approved a proposed measure seeking a three-year fixed term for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) commandant.
With 21 votes, the Senate adopted the version of House Bill 10841.
Senate President Pro-Tempore Jinggoy Estrada said the proposal would help the PCG chief effectively carry out his duties and implement decisions, reforms and strategies that will have a long-term impact on the country.
Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian said the three-year fixed term for the PCG chief would provide stability to the agency’s leadership and allow greater focus on long-term programs in the PCG.
Sen. Raffy Tulfo pointed out the importance of maintaining continuity in the leadership of the PCG, especially now that the coast guard is “facing threats, bullying and harassment from China in the West Philippine Sea.”
Sen. Joel Villanueva said the proposed measure recognizes the critical role of the PCG in guarding and securing the country’s borders.
