The Sinulog sa Dakbayan 2025 Showdown proved to be another moment of glory for Lumad Basakanon of Barangay Basak San Nicolas, as they once again claimed the top spot in this year’s competition, bringing home P620,000 in total cash prizes.

Known for their vibrant performances and deep devotion to the Santo Niño, Lumad Basakanon emerged as the grand champion, earning titles for Best in Ritual Showdown, Best in Street Dancing, Best in Choreography, and Best in Costume.  They also won fourth place in Best in Musicality earning additional P15,000 cash prize.

Their winning performance depicted the lives of fisherfolk grappling with life’s challenges and finding salvation through their unwavering faith in the Santo Niño.

Their choreography seamlessly wove traditional movements with the theme of divine intervention, captivating both judges and the audience.

Maria Rose Jane Arreza, Festival Queen of Lumad Basakanon, shared the group’s struggles to maintain their winning streak, including budget constraints and personal challenges among the dancers.

Arreza, who has been a dancer for the group for a long time, said that coming up with a fresh concept was particularly difficult, given their long history of participation in the competition.

“Kay muana man sila nga ang Lumad pirmi lang gabalik-balik, some of the groups ga-look up sad namo, so grabe ka challenging nga mapanindot pa namo among concept, among storyline,” she said, adding that the group drew inspiration from their devotion to the Santo Niño.

Other winners are: Hugpong Masidlakon, Home of Siomai Festival of Barangay Tisa

(second prize) with P450,000 cash prize. The group also won second place in street dancing earning an extra P30,000 and second place in Best in Musicality with P30,000 additional prize.

Their performance, titled “Hulagway sa Kamatouran,” symbolized justice and equality. One of the standout moments featured dancers blindfolded, representing fairness in the eyes of God.

In third place was Banay Labangon of Barangay Labangon (P350,000). They also won third in the Street Dancing (P20,000) and 1st Place in Best in Musicality (P50,000). Their presentation focused on family values, showcasing the Santo Niño’s blessings in nurturing relationships and fostering unity.

Fourth Place was Banuan Cultural Group of Guadalupe ( P250,000). They also won fifth place in Best in Musicality with an extra P10,000 to their winnings. Their performance tackled the seven deadly sins, portraying a journey of spiritual revival and redemption through faith in the Santo Niño.

Bag-Ong Tribu of Kasambagan (fifth place) with P200,000 cash prize. The group highlighted the mental health struggles of Generation Alpha, caused by the rise of social media, and how faith can lead to healing and hope.

Completing the winners, on 6th place was Maampoong Baniladnon of Barangay Banilad. The group took home P150,000 cash.

The competition showcased not only the artistic prowess of the participants but also their heartfelt devotion to the Santo Niño. From emotional storylines to intricate costumes, each performance was a testament to the enduring faith and creativity of the Cebuanos.

The Hugpong ng mga Manayaw ng Bayan brought the struggles of Overseas Filipino Workers to life, while the Kalunasan Cultural Dance Troupe moved the audience with the inspiring story of a blind child.

As Lumad Basakanon and other contingents prepare for the Sinulog Grand Parade on Sunday, January 19, the energy and spirit of the festival remain vibrant.

The Sinulog sa Dakbayan 2025 not only honored tradition but also underscored the resilience and creativity of its performers, solidifying Cebu’s place as the heart of Philippine festivals. — /FPL  (FREEMAN)
