Council calls for robust telecom signal for Sinulog

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City Council is urging telecommunication companies to enhance and upgrade their networks for the highly anticipated Sinulog Festival 2025.

In yesterday’s session, Councilor Jaypee Labella, chairperson of the Committee on Information and Communications Technology, highlighted the need for robust communication infrastructure as a critical component of the festival's preparations.

The council approved Labella’s resolutions urging telecom providers to take immediate action to ensure uninterrupted connectivity for the expected influx of spectators. Labella emphasized that reliable communication services are vital for an event of this scale, which annually attracts up to 1.5 million attendees, including tourists, balikbayan, and local visitors.

“Our city is not just the venue for Sinulog; it is also home to a number of beautiful tourist spots that attract visitors from all over the globe. Therefore, it is essential that we make sure our internet and communication services are top-notch,” said Labella.

Labella also cited an incident in September 2024 when an American internet personality criticized Cebu’s internet connectivity, describing it as “the worst internet ever.” He noted that such feedback serves as a wake-up call to improve connectivity and leave a lasting positive impression on visitors.

“Cebu is recognized as a cultural city rich in history, tradition, and pride. We hold our heritage dear, and it is what makes us unique… However, while we treasure our history, we must also understand that honoring our heritage does not mean living in the past,” said Labella.

The council hopes that the Sinulog Festival can showcase Cebu City’s capacity to adapt to modern technological demands while celebrating its rich cultural heritage.

Labella also pointed out that since Sinulog 2020, the city has discontinued the practice of signal jamming during the festival. Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia recently affirmed that there would be no signal shutdown for Sinulog 2025, emphasizing the importance of maintaining reliable communication throughout the celebration. — /FPL (FREEMAN)
