360 degree camera an asset vs. fires

Kristin De Dios - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Mandaue City Fire Station Communications and Electronics Section (MCFS-COMMEL) has introduced a new piece of equipment designed to enhance their ability to respond to fire-related emergencies across the city and neighboring areas, including Cebu City and Lapu-Lapu City.

Their new 360-degree camera, installed at the roof deck of a hotel in Mandaue City, allows the city’s COMMEL team to verify fire reports by zooming in on locations and identifying the best possible routes for responders to take.

MCFS fire marshal Superintendent Arnel Abella said the camera system is a huge asset for them, as it allows them to easily verify if smoke is present and pinpoint the exact location of the fire whenever they receive a call.

Abella said this technological upgrade ensures quicker and more efficient response to fire emergencies in the city.

“Very advantageous g’yud siya nga naa tay 360 camera nga nakabutang didto sa hotel,” said Abella.

Abella said that even before the fire truck reaches the scene, on-duty personnel at the COMMEL can confirm if the fire is active through the 360-degree camera.

In addition, he said that COMMEL personnel who have control of the camera can monitor traffic conditions and determine the best possible route for responders, ensuring they are guided efficiently during their response.

Abella explained that with the new camera system, personnel at the fire station can now instantly assess the situation and determine if the alarm should be raised, unlike before when responders were the ones who had to make the decision, which took more time.

He added that since the station personnel are now informed of the situation in real-time, they can quickly request assistance from other fire stations and volunteers for a faster and more coordinated response.

“Advance g’yud siya nga makabuhat ta sa real-time nga situation kung unsa nay nahitabo sa sunog,” said Abella.

He added that the camera system can also observe not only fires but also vehicular accidents because of its zoom capability.

He also added that during their verification process whether a call is legitimate or a prank, the advanced technology allows responders to verify the situation in real-time on the map.

While the fire truck is on its way, the location can be checked to verify if the fire is confirmed or not. If the fire is positive, they can request additional assistance; if not, they can abort the response.

“Advantage g’yud. Dako kaayo siyag tabang sa atoa nga part,” said Abella.

Abella revealed that the 360-degree camera, which was installed a month ago, cost ?300,000.

The funds for the camera were sourced from 20% of the collection from fire fees, allocated by the local government unit specifically for the Bureau of Fire Protection. — (FREEMAN)
