Citywide cleanup on Saturday

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City Vice Mayor Dondon Hontiveros has called on the Cebuanos to join the 18th Clean-up Challenge tomorrow, Dec.14, as a gift to one’s home and Mother Earth.

The last citywide clean-up of the year aptly carries the theme “Ang Limpyong kalikupan, maoy nindot nga Pinaskuhan”.

“Of course, it’s a season of giving kaning Pasko, but we also have a shared responsibility nga to keep our City clean,” Hontiveros said.

Hontiveros also reminded everyone of the City Ordinance 2593, which institutionalized cleanups of rivers, natural waterways, and coastal areas within the city.

Hontiveros thanked acting city administrator Atty. Kristine Batucan for coming up with a memo assigning employees from different offices to help in the cleanup drive. Other government offices, companies, civic groups, and some schools have also signed up and signified to join the cleanup.

Hontiveros hopes that more Cebuanos will take part in the event, including the City scholars.

“Again naa tay responsibility and mas maayong magtinabangay ta…Atong regalo sa atong tagsa tagsa nga panimalay nga limpyo atong environment,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mayor Raymond Garcia has clarified the city’s responsibility in the collection of garbage in the barangays. He said that garbage along the highways is the city government’s responsibility to collect but those in the barangay roads belong to the barangays.

“Ingon ani man gud, para mahibawo mo, ang explanation ana mao ni, ang Cebu City mokolekta ra og basura basta main road… So, kung main road na, ang Cebu City maoy mokolekta. Kung interior road na gani na, sa barangay, ang mokolekta ang barangay,” Garcia said.

The city government, however, is willing to assist the barangays if they ask for help.

“Mao na among kasabotan gyud. However, kung dili kaya sa inyong barangay mo-come in mi, unya kami mangolekta,”he added. — (FREEMAN)
