DOTr open to EVs as public transport
CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) plans to gradually increase the number of electronic vehicles to be included in the Public Transport Modernization Program.
According to DOTr Undersecretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Jesus Ferdinand Ortega, this is their move to advance zero carbon emission and mobility as well as alternative-fuel vehicles as part of the government’s commitment to climate response and gradual shift to renewable energy.
DOTr is also pushing further the promotion of active transportation with the establishment of bike lanes and walkways, and other climate resiliency and climate mitigation efforts.
This climate mitigation efforts include electric trains, sustainable aviation fuel, crew training on use of methanol for sea vessels, solar panels for airport terminals, and hybrid ferry boats along Pasig River, among others.
“This harmonization of transport projects is crucial for shaping a more sustainable future and creating greener cities that are safe, commuter/pedestrian friendly and accessible for all,” he said.
Meanwhile, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said he is excited over the much-anticipated Public-Private Partnership project, the takeover of the operations and maintenance of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport by the New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. that is expected to generate approximately ?900 billion in government revenues for the duration of the concession agreement.
"We expect the concessionaire to increase airport capacity to almost double - from 35 million passengers per annum, to 62 million. We also expect an uptick in air traffic movement from 40 movements per hour to 48. The airport rehabilitation should generate more than 58,000 jobs due to increased tourism arrivals and spending," he said.
SMC Chairman Ramon Ang also shared the same feeling of excitement on the upcoming turnover as it will mark history in the Philippine aviation sector and give Filipinos the world-class facility they deserve.
"This PPP project is about building a better future for the Filipino people. It's about making an investment in our progress. And while we are operating NAIA this is shared legacy for the next generation and for our country. We committed to working closely in all stakeholders to ensure NAIA's success. For the country, for our people and for the generation to come," he said.
DOTR also said that the Senate panel had already given the green light to the ?180 billion budget for DOTr in 2025.
The budget, which will now be subject to plenary deliberations, received support from committee members. — (FREEMAN)
