Strict dress code to be implemented at Basilica Minore del Santo Niño

CEBU, Philippines — The Basilica Minore del Santo Niño (BMSN) will start implementing a dress code policy by October 1, 2024, ending the usual practice of providing shawls to all pilgrims, mass-goers, and visitors who arrive in attire deemed inappropriate for worship.

With the public advisory released yesterday, September 1, Augustinian Friars of the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country said that this is part of a broader effort to preserve the sanctity and solemnity of the historic Basilica.

Inappropriate upper attire includes spaghetti straps, tube tops, racerbacks, sleeveless shirts, tank tops, or anything without sleeves, as well as crop tops.

For lower attire, short skirts, low-waist pants, and ripped jeans are not allowed. Additionally, caps and any kind of hats are also prohibited.

“To maintain the solemnity of our worship space, those arriving in attire deemed unsuitable for worship or who attempt to wear shawls rented outside the Basilica will be denied entry,” read a portion of the advisory.

The proper attire acknowledged by Basilica includes collared blouses with sleeves, long dresses with sleeves that reach the knee or are longer, knee-length or longer skirts, neckline tops with sleeves, polo shirts or collared shirts, t-shirts or long-sleeve shirts, jeans or slacks, and attire suitable for office wear or smart casual outfits.

For footwear, churchgoers are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes or sandals with straps for women, and closed-toe shoes or slide sandals for men.

The Augustinian Friars, with this new dress code policy, cited the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), particularly CCC 1387, which emphasizes the importance of bodily demeanor, including gestures and clothing, as a reflection of the respect, solemnity, and joy associated with sacred moments.

Additionally, tourists are advised to avoid visiting the Basilica on Fridays and Sundays unless they plan to take part in the liturgical services.

“Together, as one Catholic Christian community, let us ensure a respectful and meaningful experience for all who come to the Basilica, the home of our beloved Holy Child, Señor Santo Niño de Cebu,” the Augustinian Friars stated. (CEBU NEWS)
