Mandaue council approves on second reading financial aid to kin of uniformed personnel
CEBU, Philippines — The Mandaue City Council approved on second reading the proposed ordinance on “extending financial assistance to the beneficiaries of uniformed personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard, the National Bureau of Investigation, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police, the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency killed while in the performance of their duty.”
Principal author Councilor Jennifer del Mar, in her three-page proposed ordinance, stated that these uniformed personnel are exposed to dangers inherent in their duties.
She noted that there have been unfortunate occasions in the past where uniformed personnel lost their lives while performing their duties, leaving their families not only emotionally distraught but also financially displaced.
The proposed measure stated that families of uniformed personnel who died in the line of duty may face unexpected expenses arising from the deceased's death, such as funeral costs, medical expenses, and other bills.
The Special Financial Assistance referred to in this ordinance shall be extended to uniformed personnel who are assigned, designated, and/or hold office in police stations, fire stations, district offices, jails, and similar assignments within Mandaue City, such as the Mandaue City Police Office and its stations, the NBI Mandaue City District Office, Mandaue City Jail, and the Bureau of Fire Protection Mandaue City, among others.
“Extending financial assistance can help alleviate the burden of these costs and helps ensure that the family can maintain their standard of living during a difficult time. Financial Assistance can provide some peace of mind during a time of grief, allowing families of the deceased uniformed personnel to focus on healing and adjustment rather than immediate financial worries,” part of the proposed measure reads.
It added that providing financial aid is a way to honor and recognize the sacrifice made by the uniformed personnel, demonstrating the City’s gratitude and respect for their service and dedication.
The family or beneficiary of any uniformed personnel covered under Section 3 of this ordinance, who is killed while in the performance of their duty or by reason of their office or position, shall be entitled to the special financial assistance provided for in this ordinance in the total amount of P50,000. This is in addition to any compensation, donation, insurance, gift, pension, grant, or any form of benefit which the deceased or their family may receive or be entitled to.
“It also reflects the community's commitment to supporting those who serve and protect, and sends a strong message to uniformed personnel in Mandaue City that their work is valued, and their sacrifices are recognized,” the proposed measure further said. —/LPM (FREEMAN)
