CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) started the five-day enrolment period for public elementary and secondary schools yesterday with the traditional Brigada Eskwela, a nationwide school maintenance program that engages all education stakeholders to contribute their time, efforts, and resources in ensuring that public schools are all set in time for the opening of classes.

DepEd-7 regional director Salustiano Jimenez said they are expecting two million learners in both elementary and high school to go back to school on July 29, 2024.

“So far, So good,” Jimenez said of the first day of enrolment and Brigada Eskwela in Central Visayas.

As the new school year is about to begin, Jimenez said among the perennial problems of DepEd are the lack of classrooms and teachers.

“As of now, we cannot tell yet pila gyud ang kuwang nga classrooms and teachers kay ongoing pa ang enrollment. That is why, we appeal to parents and guardians nga ipa enroll na ilang mga anak,” said Jimenez.

The regional education official was called for a meeting in Manila with the newly-appointed Education Secretary Edgardo Angara.

This year’s Brigada Eskwela is anchored on the theme: “Bayanihan Para sa Matatag na Paaralan”. — (FREEMAN)
