CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH)-7 is taking all steps to address the “alarming” cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in Cebu City, which has the second highest number in the country.

Dr. Jaime Bernadas, DOH-7 regional director, said in an interview on Monday, July 1, 2024, that they consider this “alarming” and that it is high time they intensify their promotion for awareness for the public to know that it is a “real threat.”

“It is around us, we all have to avoid and to prevent na modaghan ang atong mga kaso diri sa atong syudad,” said Bernadas.

Bernadas had yet to give specific data on the number of HIV cases in Central Visayas. But according to him, the rise in HIV cases is attributed to the usage of injectable drug users.

“Mao na ang unang nisaka sa Cebu,” said Bernadas.

Lately, he added that they have also observed the rise of “men to men” sexual activities as a cause of HIV. He highlighted that they assessed the lack of prevention in this form of transmission, rather than with the heterosexual contacts.

“So mao na nga angay sab mahibaw-an sa atong kaigsuonan na bisan unsa nga sexual contact should be protected kung dili siya nimo permanent partner,” said Bernadas.

Bernadas explained they currently have HIV counselors who have been making rounds in the city’s health centers, establishments, and partners in the non-government organization (NGOs) to intensify their campaign against HIV.

He further said they are reiterating in these programs, especially to HIV-positive patients, that this virus can be controlled through medication.

“Meaning matambalan gyud siya,” said Bernadas.

Bernadas cited as an example an HIV patient who has been battling the virus for 20 years but is presently living well since it has been controlled and didn’t progress into an “autoimmune disease.”

“Kay na control man iyang HIV virus,” said Bernadas.

Bernadas added that the government has free medicines for HIV at treatment hubs, such as Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center and the Cebu City Health Department. — (FREEMAN)
