Mandaue to soon get free limited public Wi-Fi

CEBU, Philippines — Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes and Synetcom Philippines Inc. recently signed a memorandum of understanding on the provision of free limited public Wi-Fi in the city and the barangays.

The memorandum states that Synetcom is willing to provide basic infrastructure, including the necessary equipment, materials, and labor to provide Wi-Fi, as internet connectivity is now seen as a fundamental resource for socio-economic development and well-being.

The memorandum takes effect immediately upon signing of the parties for a period of three years, renewable for another three years, unless revoked in accordance with paragraph 5, which states that that no party shall be liable to the other in damages or otherwise, for any failure to perform any term or commitment of the memorandum on account of any circumstance beyond such party’s control.

As part of its commitment, the city government will provide Synetcom the assistance in identifying location installations, cable wires, assistance in identification of access points for the routers, and in securing the necessary gate passes, among others.

Synetcom will shoulder the electricity cost of all the Wi-Fi devices installed Visayan Electric poles, and will handle the repair and maintenance costs of the project and also take charge of installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of any material or equipment

Synetcom has promised that it will not directly or indirectly obtain unauthorized data in any of its systems. They also said they will allow the city government to make public announcements necessary for public welfare such as those regarding earthquakes, fire, and other emergencies.

The memorandum can be terminated by either party with or without cause.

For of termination without cause, the terminating party shall have no liability of any kind, provided that at least 90 days advance notice in writing is given to the other party.

In the instance that this memorandum is terminated with cause, liability shall be borne by the party that caused the cause the termination. – /BRP (FREEMAN)
