Open spaces eyed as parking area

Iris Hazel Mascardo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — To address the lack of parking spaces for City Hall clients, the Cebu City Council is looking at the possibility of utilizing the open spaces in front of the legislative building as parking area. The idea stemmed from a privilege speech of Councilor Pastor Alcover Jr.

The councilor said the lack of parking spaces has been one of the concerns raised to him by several constituents doing regular business at City Hall.

“To be specific, so city government clients are complaining for the lack of parking areas in Cebu City Hall. Daghan na kaayo ta’g nadawat nga reklamo, di ta katubag,” said Alcover.

He said that the lack or absence of parking space is the most common concern he received from the people who have transactions at City Hall. Alcover said the situation would sometime lead to conflict.

“Kay ang nga client sa city hall, mag park sa dili designated areas,” said Alcover.

According to Alcover, the open space in front of the legislative building could be a sigh of relief for the transacting public at City Hall.

“Dako kaayong hasul alang sa mga taxpayers ug uban pang mga clients sa city hall nga wala silay kaparkingan,” said Alcover.

He said some are forced to park at the Plaza Independencia, a few blocks away from the City Hall, to avoid apprehension for illegal parking or worse getting their vehicles clamped by the traffic enforcers.

“So daghan kaayog mga bagulbol, daghan kaayog mga reklamo nga atong madawat. And again, di ko katubag ngano nga dili paparkingan ang atbang sa legislative building,” said Alcover.

He suggested regulating the parking such as limiting the period of time that a client can use the parking space to allow others to use it. This way, Alcover said, more clients can be accommodated.

Alcover asked, through a formal motion which the body approved, acting Vice Mayor Donaldo Hontiveros to study the feasibility of using the open spaces in front of the legislative building as parking spaces, subject to regulation. (CEBU NEWS)
