Chan quits from PDP

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — In solidarity with Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan has also tendered his resignation from Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP).

In a letter to PDP president and Palawan Second District Rep. Jose Alvarez, Chan made known his decision to leave the party.

“I have made this difficult decision to resign because I believe it is in the best interests of Lapu-Lapu City to maintain unity with the tri-cities and the Province of Cebu,” Chan said in his letter dated May 31, 2024.

“Although Lapu-Lapu City is a highly-urbanized city, we are inter-dependent and inter-connected as one Cebu Island, thus, I firmly believe that we must work harmoniously and strengthen our relationship with our neighboring local government units,’ Chan added.

Chan’s resignation from PDP came days after Garcia and Cortes bolted out of the party.

The governor’s decision to leave PDP stemmed from her conflict with PDP Visayas President and suspended Cebu City mayor Michael Rama. Garcia said she could not anymore stay in a party whose Visayas president filed an administrative complaint against her before the Office of the President.

Earlier, Rama filed a complaint against Garcia over disagreements in the ongoing Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (CBRT) project. The governor has opposed the construction of the CBRT stations near the Capitol building because it will alter the view of the building, a historical landmark.

Cortes, on the other hand, tendered his resignation as PDP member in support of the governor. (CEBU NEWS)
