Cebu to host gastronomy tourism forum
CEBU, Philippines — The Philippines is hosting the “First United Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Asia and the Pacific” and it is happening on June 26 to 27 in Cebu.
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) defines gastronomy tourism as “a type of tourism activity which is characterized by the visitor’s experience linked with food and related products and activities while travelling”.
Along with authentic, traditional, and/or innovative culinary experiences, gastronomy tourism may also involve other related activities such as visiting the local producers, participating in food festivals and attending cooking classes.
This type of tourism has emerged as a significant travel motivation in recent years, driven by the growing interest in food among travelers seeking authentic experiences.
The United Nations acknowledges Asia for its culinary diversity, thus making gastronomy tourism a major draw for tourists eager to explore the diverse cultures and culinary traditions that define the region.
The Department of Tourism said the “rise of gastronomy tourism presents substantial opportunities for sustainable socio-economic development, cultural exchange, and community well-being”.
“It has also expanded beyond dining experiences for all stakeholders within a destination's gastronomy and tourism value chains, involving producers, processing firms, the hospitality sector, retail, and other service providers,” it added.
The profound connection of food with rural landscapes, it has brought significant impact on rural development.
UN also emphasized that by safeguarding the gastronomic heritage and culinary traditions of a territory, gastronomy tourism initiatives play a crucial role in supporting local communities, thereby fostering regional cohesion and resilience.(CEBU NEWS)
