CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu Provincial government turned over a total of P11.5 million worth of financial assistance to the municipality of Pilar in Camotes Islands during the first quarter of Capitol’s caravan of services last Tuesday.

The cash assistance is on top of the P112-million worth of new road project in the island municipality.

The office of Pilar Mayor Winky Santiago received P5 million from the Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Fifth District Board Member Red Duterte. The said amount is to be used solely for the town’s various infrastructure projects.

Vice Mayor Chiziline Maratas, on the other hand, got P2 million for her projects while the 10 municipal councilors were also allocated P2.5 million each to pursue their own projects.

On the other hand, each of the 10 barangays in Pilar also got P200,000 to fund infrastructure projects as well.  Garcia also led the inauguration of the first-phase of the Pilar circumferential road.

The first phase is one-fourth of the entire 24-kilometer length of the island’s circumferential road which the Capitol committed to complete. The first phase is six kilometers long and was allocated P112.05 million. The road project was completed after 300 days by Shalom Construction Inc.

Meanwhile, Garcia also turned over a check worth P110,000 to Ma. Ethel Lapeseros, wife of a tanod in Brgy. Moabog in Pilar who died due to an accident while at work.

The check, paid by state insurer Government Service Insurance System, was among the biggest assistance given during the Caravan of Services in the island. The deceased barangay worker, Marcelito Lapeseros, was among the thousands of barangay frontliners the Cebu Province has insured with GSIS.

The Provincial Government pays for their insurance premium, including the premium of insurance coverage of barangay officials, municipal officials, city officials, as well as the members of the Provincial Board. –/FPL (FREEMAN)
