Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — After the postponement, the Cebu City Food Security Summit has been finally staged.

This is the first time that the city government is holding the summit with farmer groups, non-government organizations, businessmen, and other stakeholders in attendance.

During the opening, Mayor Michael Rama is inviting everyone to take part and cooperate in the summit.

City Councilor Pastor “Jun” Alcover, who chairs the committee on agriculture in the City Council, said this is very important to ensure that there is enough supply of food for the residents of Cebu especially with the unpredictable weather condition.

Alcover also noted that the population in the City of Cebu is also increasing.

"Nagkadaghan ang mangaon, pero nagkagamay ang mga nag-produce og pagkaon. Mao na nga ato gyud nga ipaneguro nga dili maabot sa punto nga managhan ang gipang-gutom," Alcover said during the opening of the Food Security Summit at the Plaza Sugbo grounds.

The exchange of ideas, technology, and approach to farming and other aspects concerning food production is also in discussion.

The summit also saw an array of food and products on display in front of the City Hall. These include lechon, siomai, eggs, chorizo de Cebu, chicharon, ham along with fruits and vegetables, among other agricultural products. It will be up until May 26.

Meanwhile,  Alcover also disclosed that he is looking into a scholarship program in line with agriculture.

Alcover is also advocating for urban gardening at the City Hall for employees to be an example to others in return. — Sanden J. Anadia (FREEMAN)
