OSA marks 450th anniversary of the finding of “Ecce Homo”
CEBU, Philippines — The Order of Saint Augustine (OSA) and the Province of Santo Niño de Cebu-Philippines commemorate the 450th anniversary of the finding of "Ecce Homo", the image of Our Lord Jesus Christ, with a series of activities at the Basilica Minore del Sto Niño.
Considered as one of the oldest religious icons in the country alongside the image of Sto. Niño, Ecce Homo, a Latin word which means "Behold the Man", emulates an image of the suffering Christ.
It was miraculously discovered on August 20, 1572 in an early settlement of Sugbo. It came home to the Basilica on August 20, 2011 after almost five decades since it was brought to San Agustin Museum in Intramuros, Manila for an exhibit.
Over the years, the historical artifact under the care of the Augustinian Friars of the Basilica helps the faithful open their eyes to the meaning of Christian suffering.
It also reminds people to rediscover and deepen their relationship with Jesus as depicted in his Passion.
The special occasion carrying the theme "Unfelt yet Present" kicked off with the Enthronement of the Image of the Ecce Homo de Cebu last Wednesday, August 17.
A Triduum Prayer and Masses will be celebrated every 5:30 p.m. until Friday, August 19.
There's also an exhibit of the various works of art depicting Ecce Homo. The four-day event culminates with a solemn mass at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, to be presided by Fray Andres D. Rivera, OSA, the Prior Provincial of the Province of Santo Niño de Cebu-Philippines. It will be followed by a procession inside the Basilica Compound.— FPL (FREEMAN)
