Teachers ‘not required’ to report on-site, May 2-13

CEBU, Philippines — Education Secretary Leonor Briones has approved the recommendation of regional directors and division superintendents allowing teachers not to report on-site at schools from May 2 to 13, 2022.

Two weeks ago, DepEd announced no classes to public schools in the dates stated due to election-related activities.

However, despite the class suspension, teachers are still expected to report to their respective schools, even on days when there are no election-related duties or activities.

With Briones’ go signal, teachers will no longer be required to report to their schools from May 2 to 13.

“The DepEd Secretary during the joint Execom-Mancom meeting held on Friday, considering the best interest of the service and of the teaching force, approved the recommendation of the Regional Directors and Division Superintendents raised through the Governance and Operations Strand,” DepEd's announcement late Friday night read.

This after the majority of the teachers, numbering more than 640,000, are expected to serve in the May 9 national and local elections.

Along with this, teachers and schools are making preparations for election activities and polling places before election day. There will also be immediate post-election activities in the schools and by the teachers who will serve in the elections.

Earlier, it was also reported that there are over 37,000 public schools set to serve as polling centers for the national and local elections this 2022.

For teachers not serving in the elections, they will have to continue to attend to tasks including the accomplishment of school forms, preparation of instructional materials, preparation of learning plans, and evaluation of learner’s outputs/portfolios, during the period.

Briones has also instructed the Governance and Operations and the Curriculum and Instruction strands to provide the appropriate guidance to field units to implement the decision. — JMD (FREEMAN)
