City to open new access road in Sambag 1 & 2

Mary Ruth R. Malinao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The Cebu City government is opening an access road connecting Barangays Sambag I and Sambag 2 from B. Rodriguez to P. Del Rosario Extension.

Councilor Jerry Guardo said they are now on the planning stage for the proposed project after Mayor Edgardo Labella gave his approval to proceed.

“Ako na’ng gikonsulta ni mayor. He already gave me the green light to proceed sa pagtrabaho na,” said Guardo, who chairs the City Council’s Committee on Infrastructure.

The councilor estimated that the two-lane road will be at least one kilometer long.

“Nag-design na karon ang atong Engineering Department to widen the road, road widening plus with sidewalk plus with drainage system on both sides,” he said.

Guardo said the project is expected to greatly help the city’s traffic decongestion program.

“Dako kaayo ni nga tabang ma-decongest ang traffic along Jones Avenue likewise diri sa Calamba... If this road will be opened, if you’re coming from Guadalupe or from the south, diha naka moagi, di na ka moagi sa Fuente so diritso na sad ka diri sa downtown Colon area,” said Guardo.

Following a “successful negotiation” with one of the largest property owners that would be affected by the project, the Chuachoy Family, Guardo conducted an ocular inspection in the area. He was assisted by the barangay captains of the two barangays.

The site inspection was also joined by the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) engineers, geodetic engineers, Division on the Welfare of the Urban Poor (DWUP) personnel, and the City Assessor.

For the families that would be affected by the project, Guardo said he will recommend for the construction of a medium-rise building within the area for them. — FPL (FREEMAN)
