80 more modern jeepneys to ply Metro Cebu routes
CEBU, Philippines — More modern jeepneys are expected to be on the streets this week in Metro Cebu.
Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board 7 regional director Eduardo Montealto, Jr. said yesterday that 80 units of modernized jeepneys will be out on the streets on January 14 and 20.
Montealto said that 30 units will run on January 14 and another 50 units on January 20.
“But mag-expect ko nga napay mga modernized jeepneys ang madungag within this month,” Montealto told The Freeman.
To date, there are 319 units of modernized jeepneys operating in the cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue.
Montealto added that so far, only traditional public utility jeepneys from Talisay City will be allowed to enter Cebu City as only the said city has requested for it.
But Montealto said, still it needs certificate of compliance from LTFRB otherwise these TPUJs can still not enter in Cebu City.
As of yesterday, LTFRB-7 has not issued any certificate of compliance to Talisay’s TPUJs drivers or operators.
Montealto also said that Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella told him that small TPUJs like multicabs should not be allowed to enter Cebu City.
Currently, there are 3,665 traditional PUJs operating in Cebu Province and in the three highly-urbanized cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Cebu.
Montealto said the bulk of the traditional PUJs are in Cebu Province, 309 units in Cebu City, 14 units in Mandaue and several units, mostly multi-cabs, in Lapu-Lapu City. — GMR (FREEMAN)
