Riprap collapses, DPWH probe sought

Mary Ruth R. Malinao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu City Councilor Jerry Guardo is urging the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to conduct an investigation into the collapse of the riprap wall in sitio Paray, Barangay Kasambagan on Wednesday afternoon.

“As far as I know, bag-o lang kuno ni ang contract, bag-o lang kuno ni ang riprap wall. Unya, how come nga ingon ana na ang resulta? Nibigay na siya... DPWH must conduct an investigation sa ilang contractor,” said Guardo.

“This has to be done immediately kay nakita nato (ug) at risk ang mga tawo, ang mga balay affected diha dapita. The moment nga mosaka ang tubig, mosud nasad na didto, mosud nasad sa ilawom, delikado nasad na ang kanang riprap wall mobigay napud nang dapita,” he added.

Guardo, together with the DPWH-Cebu City District representative, inspected the area yesterday morning.

He said the project was done two or three years ago, so it might still be covered with a warranty.

“Based on my personal assessment, mahug og sub-standard ang pagka-trabaho sa mao nga riprap wall,” said Guardo.

Based on the inspection, one house was affected due to the incident.

“Naa man ang taga-DPWH, kinahanglan gyud dayon immediate nga reinforcement. Pag-repair sa riprap wall unya... Kinahanglan trabahoon ni sa contractor immediately to prevent any untoward accident,” said the councilor.

Engineer Geronimo Rigor Capariño of the DPWH said they will have a meeting to discuss on what immediate solution can be done in the area.

“Ang nahitabo man gud, kani siyang structure nato kuan ni siya, existing, tapos amo na siyang gi-face wall. Gibutangan lang namo og additional concrete nga 100 mm. Ang findings namo ani, ang tubig ana niagi sa luyo. Ang structure napadahili... Naa nay existing nga riprap. Gisumpayan namo. Nag-gap lang mi,” said Capariño. — GAN (FREEMAN)
