Naga City mayor resigns
CEBU, Philippines — Naga City, Cebu Mayor Valdemar Chiong has tendered his resignation before Governor Gwendolyn Garcia on Monday, citing personal reason. His resignation will take effect on March 16.
Chiong said he felt bored after serving 90 days preventive suspension imposed by the Sandiganbayan in connection with a graft case filed against him in 2014.
“Kapoy na sad, maayo nalang nang mayor sa mga batan-on,” Chiong told The Freeman over the phone last night.
With his resignation, Chiong will leave the city’s leadership to his daughter, Vice Mayor Christine Vanessa Chiong. His older brother, Virgilio, the city’s first councilor, will serve as vice mayor.
For the meantime, Chiong said he will focus on his business. Asked if he is already retiring from politics, Chiong said he might consider going back only if the first district is divided into two congressional districts.
He admitted that Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas promised him to take the lead in dividing the district. Chiong also admitted that he is now more interested in a congressional seat. FPL (FREEMAN)
