New shoes, uniforms for inmates

Lorraine L. Ecarma - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — About 2,300 pairs of shoes were already delivered to the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC), but these have yet to be distributed to the inmates.

During Governor Gwen Garcia’s first visit to CPDRC last July, she promised the inmates new uniforms and shoes after they performed for her.

Famous around the world for their mob dance videos, Garcia frowned upon seeing the ratty uniforms the inmates wore during the performance.

While addressing the inmates, she called on the Provincial General Services Officer Bernard Calderon to start canvassing for cloth and shoes.

In a recent interview, Calderon said that they have already delivered more than 2,300 pairs of shoes to CPDRC.

Each pair of shoes cost about P265.  The total cost of the inmates’ shoes was P609,000.

However, the shoes remain undistributed as the PGSO is still working on procuring the cloth.

According to Calderon, they are having difficulty with purchasing the cloth because of the supplier’s cash-on-delivery policy.

“Nagre-canvass mi adto kay COD man gud,” Calderon said.

P415,800 will be spent for cloth for the inmates’ uniforms.

Meanwhile, about P225,000 of Capitol funds will go to eight Mandaue City barangays for socio-cultural activities.

Through a resolution authored by 6th District Provincial Board Member Thadeo Jovito Ouano, the financial appropriations for socio-cultural activities have been allocated under the Local Assistance Fund of Calendar Year 2019.

The budget falls under the Office of the Governor.

The appropriations for socio-cultural activities include P30,000 for Guizo, P20,000 for Ibabao-Estancia, P30,000 for Jagobiao, P20,000 for Looc, P30,000 for Pagsabungan, P15,000 for Maguikay, P30,000 for Opao and P30,000 for Subangdaku. P20,000 will also be given to the Sangguniang Kabataan of Barangay Opao for a basketball tournament.

“Such appropriations will help fast track their barangay’s delivery of services for the benefit and convenience of their constituents,” the resolution read.

Copies of the resolution will be forwarded to Governor Gwen Garcia and the respective barangays captains. (FREEMAN)
