Food festival kicks off month-long Kadaugan sa Mactan celebration

CEBU, Philippines — The Kadaugan sa Mactan, one of the most awaited and historical events in the country that commemorates the heroism of Datu Lapulapu, officially opened last night with a food festival and book launching.

Hembler Mendoza, the city tourism chief, said month-long activities have been lined-up starting yesterday until April 30, 2019.

Mendoza said that for the reenactment of the Battle of Mactan, a much bigger crowd of around 20,000 at the newly-renovated Liberty Shrine (formerly the Mactan Shrine) is expected.

The renovation is part of the city’s preparation as the National Historical Commission of the Philippines sets to celebrate the 500 years circumnavigation in 2021.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza welcomes everyone as guests were treated to sumptuous dishes by the participants of the festivals coming from the city’s hotels, resorts and other food establishments.

“I am glad that besides showcasing your heritage and history, part of your celebration is the holding of a food festival. Food is after all, part of our heritage. Kaya maganda rin na maging bahagi ito ng ating mga festivals and celebrations,” said Senator Cynthia Villar in her speech during the kick-off activity

Villar, guest speaker of the event, said that food-related festivals do not only boost tourism in and around the Philippines, but also offer a good venue where the best of Filipino food are showcased to the rest of the world.

“Like what you are doing here right now. Katulad nga ng nasabi ko, dapat talagang ipagmalaki ang Filipino dishes and culinary skills in general,” Villar said referring to the food festival.

Villar added that Filipinos should all be proud of the country’s history and culture including culinary heritage.

“Let us continue to showcase to our people and the rest of the country and even the world what our cities and our people are all about as well,” the senator added.

Radaza, for her part, said that yesterday’s launching of the coffee table book, The Story of Lapu-Lapu, offers a glimpse of the beauty of the city, its white sand beaches, five star hotels and resorts, marine and bird sanctuaries.
