19 LGUs get waste shredder from Capitol

May B. Miasco - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Nineteen local government units in Cebu each received solid waste shredder worth over P8.9 million from the provincial government through the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) yesterday.

PENRO Chief Rodel Bontuyan said 18 municipalities and one component city were prioritized because they were the first to have an approved 10-year solid waste management plan.

The recipients were the city of Bogo and the municipalities of Asturias, Bantayan, Ronda, Boljoon, Borbon, Cordova, Ginatilan, Madridejos, Pilar, Pinamungajan, Poro, San Francisco, San Remegio, Santa Fe, Sogod, Tabuelan, Alegria, and Tudela.

He said this project is intended to assist the LGUs in addressing the solid waste disposal dilemma.

“Hopefully for the succeeding years, the towns and cities would be able to manage their solid waste with the help of the equipment,” he said.

The electronic shedder, which is useful in recycling materials like eco-waste, is also seen to lessen the garbage dumped into the landfill.  It can shred glass, biodegradable waste, plastics and coconut husks, among others and can shred up to 400 kilos of waste in an hour.

Shredded glass can even be mixed with cement for making hollow blocks, said Ma. Rhica Evilla, PENRO Solid Waste Management focal person.

At present, the Capitol is eyeing to establish a provincial sanitary landfill in Carmen town that would cater the northern LGUs.
