CEBU, Philippines — Transactions with the Cebu Electric Cooperative, Inc. can now be made at CEBECO’s new office at the old building of the Associated Labor Union -Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) along Arellano Boulevard.

CEBECO had to move out of the Patria de Cebu Building along P. Burgos Street because the building is up for re-development. CEBECO stayed there for 36 years.

CEBECO inaugurated its new office yesterday. ALU-TUCP opened its old building, which has been abandoned for about nine years, for CEBECO to occupy.

It was Fr. Francisco Silva who bridged CEBECO and ALU-TUCP. He used to serve as general manager of CEBECO.

Silva reached out to the sons of the late Democrito Mendoza, Raymond and Michael, the presidents of TUCP and ALU, respectively. Michael then offered the original ALU-TUCP building to CEBECO.

The building was fixed quickly so CEBECO could move in by October 6.

During yesterday’s inauguration, CEBECO disclosed that it was handed an eviction order in September. The order said it has until December 31 to vacate the building.

The Freeman reported on October 31 that real estate developer Cebu Landmasters Inc. would spend billions to re-develop the Patria de Cebu building into a mixed-use facility.

Founded in 1956, the Patria de Cebu is one of the oldest structures in the city.

The initiative to re-develop the building is in partnership with property owner, the Archdiocese of Cebu.

Also yesterday, ALU and CEBECO signed a “blood compact of brotherhood, solidarity and partnership” with Silva was Edgar Masongsong of the National Electrification Administration (NEA) as witness. (FREEMAN)
