338 public schools not ready for class opening
CEBU, Philippines — At least 338 public schools in Central Visayas are not yet ready for the opening of classes next week.
Department of Education-7 Director Juliet Jeruta said these schools still have minor construction works. She, however, said the opening of classes will proceed as scheduled on June 4 even with the minor deficiencies.
"Kulang ang kanilang facilities to indicate readiness. Kasi ang tinatawag na-readiness dito ay kasya, kung ang facilities ay kasya sa number of users…comfort is one factor where you can learn," Jeruta said.
Jeruta assured that these deficiencies will not affect the holding of classes.
"It's not across all aspects. This school might not be ready in terms of electricity lang, pero ready na sa tanan. Still, na-consider as not ready," explained assistant regional director Salustiano Jimenez.
Both officials, however, could divulge the names of the schools that are classified as not ready. They could not also tell how many are in Cebu.
DepEd-7 officials also said they are implementing the zoning policy to address the uneven distribution of enrollees. Zoning policy means that students will be advised to enroll in public schools within their respective barangays. — Kris Imea C. Ruales and Cris Rheanne S. Sacay, UV Interns/FPL (FREEMAN)
