CEBU, Philippines — The barangay and SK elections will push through as scheduled on May 14, said Senate President Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel.

He said that the Senate and the House of Representatives are already on recess and would not be able to pass any law stopping the local elections.

Earlier, it was reported that the SK and barangay elections will not push through this May after a solon has filed a resolution for the postponement in order to give way for the change in the country's form of government.

"Dayon na ang barangay og SK elections. Madayon naman na, imposible na ma-postpone kay naka-recess na kami ngayon. Wala nay balaod na mopasa pa mi kay magbalik ang senado May 15  na.  Ang election kay May 14. Kaya sigurado na ang election," Pimentel said, in a short press conference held at the Indiana Aerospace University (IAU).

Pimentel was the guest speaker of IAU's Batch 2018 graduates.

He reminded the 475 college students that they should work hard in order to gain or reap rewards in the future.

"Life is not a bed of roses, you have to work hard," he said, in a speech.

He also shared that there is a shortage of pilots not just in the country but also in different parts of the world and that their profession is now in demand.

He added that this is due to the change President Rodrigo Duterte had promised wherein the president reportedly had already accomplished six of nine priorities, including the all-out-war against drugs and corruption.

The income tax relief, pay increase for military and police, irrigation, free tuition in state colleges and universities, as well as the independent foreign policy have been passed under Duterte's leadership, according to Pimentel.

The endo (end of contract), peace talks and the federalism form of government have yet to be realized.

"We are moving in the same direction guided by our principles.  We want you to enjoy the fruits of change within your lives.  A fair and safe society. A very simple vision for our country," he said.

Pimentel is the fourth Senate President invited as a guest speaker at IAU. The past guest speakers include former Senate Presidents Neptali Gonzales, Aquilino "Nene" Pimentel, and Juan Ponce Enrile. (FREEMAN)
