Sugat Festival moved to Tuesday

CEBU, Philippines - Minglanilla's Sugat Kabanhawan Festival scheduled yesterday afternoon has been moved to Tuesday after Tropical Depression Crising damaged the venue.

Mayor Elanito Peña said they were also after the safety of participants, as well as constituents who want to witness the activity.

"Pwerteng lapoka sa ground kuyawan ko mangaslide unya ang mga bata, i-postpone lang gyud nato," he said.

Eight groups coming from different schools in the town – Tungkop Elementary School, Tungkop National High School, Tubod Elementary School, Tubod National High School, Tungkil National High School, Lipata National High School, Minglanilla National High School and Guindaruhan National High School – are joining the festival.

Dawn yesterday, during the annual “Sugat” presentation, which depicts the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 10 people sustained minor injuries when the stage occupied by VIPs, guests, and judges collapsed due to rain and strong winds brought by Tropical Depression Crising.

Injured were Marites Mandawe, 43; John Nino Gador, 3; Caroline Cainta Gador, 31; Renato Limbaga Jr.,18; Maria Ignacia Arelado, 40; John Neri Alesna Jr., 11; John Neri Alesna Sr.,43; Juvelyn Ubas, 28; Jacel Sayson,28; and Ian Paul Sanchez Gabi, 16.

All sustained minor injuries during the incident while one was brought to the hospital for treatment of a minor fracture.

Peña disclosed it was the first time an incident happened during the town's annual celebration of Easter Sunday.

“First time nga kuyawan nga dili madayon ang Sugat tungod sa grabing uwan kay ang uban LGU nag-cancel na, murag ang Minglanilla ra man ang nipadayon. Kumbati gyud,” he said.

He then assured that only the festival was postponed out of all the activities prepared for Easter Sunday.

Peña also disclosed that they visited Barangays Tulay, Ward 2 and Ward 4 that had been flooded due to the weather disturbance.

He disclosed that the riprap located in Barangay Ward 4 was damaged due to the strong current of water. —/JBB (FREEMAN)
