CEBU, Philippines - The Sinulog Grand Parade last Sunday generated close to 200 tons of garbage, said John Paul Gelasque, assistant head of Cebu City's Department of Public Services.

Most of the 200 tons were collected from General Maxilom Avenue and Juana Osmeña Extension where post-grand parade parties were held uptown.

Downtown, Barangay Santo Niño where the Basilica del Santo Niño is located was also a big contributor.   An estimated 1.5 million people took part in the grand parade.

Gelasque said the 246 street cleaners started clearing these areas at 8 p.m. Sunday.

"Naka start mig alas singko didto sa lagyo-lagyo nga mga area. Ang main gyud, alas otso na kay naa paman misa sa Santo Niño mga alas siyete so dili mi makapapahawa sa mga vendors… paghuman, mao pay pagsugod namo," he said.

Streets were clean by 5 a.m. Monday.

The garbage collected were disposed of at the transfer station of Jomara Konstruckt near the controversial landfill in Barangay Inayawan. (FREEMAN)
