Muslims assure support for Sinulog security

CEBU, Philippines - "Nothing to be alarmed of."

 This was the statement of Senior Superintendent Rey Lyndon Lawas, deputy regional director for operations, as regards security for this year's Sinulog.

 Still, he urged the people to be extra vigilant just like in other occasions, as security is not the sole responsibility of the police. 

"Everybody will be vigilant sa ilang surroundings, be watchful sa ilang surroundings, and any suspicious nga butang or tawo, I-report dayun sa nearest police station aron ma-action-nan appropriately," he told reporters after his conference with Muslim leaders in Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, and Cebu Province yesterday.

The conference took place at the Police Regional Office-7 yesterday.

 Lawas said the Muslim leaders have committed to assist the PNP in ensuring security and safety during the Sinulog.  

 "We have been grateful of the Muslims here in Central Visayas. They have been supportive to the government in all efforts and all undertakings. Itong pag-uusap natin is para ma-assure ang community na walang mangyayari sa Cebu," he said.

 Ustadz Najeeb Razul from the Islamic Propagation Society in Cebu said they respect the religious activities in Cebu and assured the city will be peaceful.

 "We have to ensure that Cebu will be peaceful. We cannot allow our own people to come to Cebu… muhimo sila’g kaguliyang," he said.

 Meanwhile, Lawas is asking the public to avoid bringing backpacks during the Sinulog Grand Parade next Sunday.

Cebu City Police Office Director Jol Doria said at least 8,000 personnel have been deployed in the city for the festivities, including teams from the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and other force multipliers.
