Holiness manifests in how people treat others – priest

Rowena D. Capistrano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The best form of holiness can be seen in the way people treat their fellowmen, especially those who have less than they have.

This was the message of Bishop Oscar Florencio, Auxiliary Bishop of the Cebu Archdiocese, to the press after celebrating a Mass yesterday, All Saints’ Day.

And if people are to display kindness, it is best to display it now, Florencio said.

“Ang katawhan gitawag sa pagkabalaan sa kinabuhi karon dayon ug dili sa sunod tuig kay dili man mahibaw-an ang mga panghitabo,” he said.

The observance of All Saints’ Day, he said, is proof of God’s victory because it is from God that holiness emanates and saints became saints because of this gift.

For his part, at the Mass he celebrated at the Calamba Cemetery, Fr. Mhar Balili, parish priest of the Archdiocesan Shrine of San Roque, reminded parishioners that while saints are declared by the church, the virtues of sainthood aren’t exclusive to them.

“Pope Francis”

While others preferred scary costumes for Halloween, a resident of Barangay Basak Pardo chose to don a costume resembling Pope Francis as he roamed the Carreta Cemetery and handed candies to children.

Rogelio Herrero said he chose the costume so children would not be scared. Herrero is a member of a religious group in his barangay.

“Unang higayon nakong nagpahigayon sa maong kalihukan nga diin dako usab nakong kalipay nga walay mga bata nga nangahadlok ug puno kini sila sa pagmaya,” he said.

Florencio himself was pleased.

(FREEMAN)
