Drug campaign worsens jail congestion in Talisay
CEBU, Philippines - The intensified campaign against illegal drugs has worsened the jail congestion problem in Talisay City.
Talisay City Jail warden Chief Inspector Josephus Jelianggao said that they are now over 300 percent excess of its capacity. Talisay City Jail only has a capacity of 104 inmates but is now home to 467 inmates.
He said the congestion problem was aggravated by the intensified police operations against illegal drugs. Jelianggao, however, is thankful to Talisay City Mayor Eduardo Gullas for allocating P11 million in the 2017 Annual Budget of the city for the city jail.
Vice Mayor Alan Bucao has already assured that the budget will be passed without controversy. Jelianggao said P5 million of the allocation will be used to construct a separate dormitory for female inmates.
He said it does not look good that male and female inmates are in the same compound. Female inmates are housed in separate building but are able to mingle with the male inmates.
"Lain paminawon, though, gi-separate sila lain tan-awon kay dunay signal uban somehow mag-uyab-uyab, signal sa kamot, naay padala-padala nga sulat," he said.
The Talisay City Jail has 49 females and 418 male inmates at present. (FREEMAN)
