PHO warns of summer diseases

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - With the intense heat this summer, the Cebu Provincial Health Office has reminded the public of the diseases that occur during summer and advised them to take necessary measures to prevent it.

Dr. Cynthia Genosolango, chief of the Provincial Health Office, said respiratory illnesses, skin diseases, diarrhea and other waterborne related illnesses are among the common health problems during summer.

Genosolango said the high temperature during summer causes food to easily get spoiled that would lead to diarrhea.

"Ideally food should be consumed in the next few hours, it can bring diarrheal diseases," Genosolango said.

She also advised the public to ensure that the source of potable water is not contaminated. If possible, she said drinking water should be boiled.

Barangay health workers and health service providers in different local government units were reminded to conduct proper household chlorination. She said the provincial government has been distributing chlorine to different local government units.

Proper washing of dishes is also important. Genosolango said that because of the limited water supply people may not wash the plates and other kitchen utensils properly.

She said there are ways to conserve water without sacrificing public health. Gensolango said it is also important that a person should always take a bath and have a proper hygiene during summer to avoid skin diseases.

The intense heat of the sun, especially from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., should be avoided because it causes heatstroke and skin damage.

Genosolango said people should keep themselves hydrated by drinking lots of water. She, however, assured the public that the provincial government has enough supply of medicines. (FREEMAN)
