Capitol trains 2,000 teachers as coaches
CEBU, Philippines - The Capitol is training around 2,000 coaches from 51 towns and cities of Cebu Province in line of its effort to mold and produce more Cebuano athletes.
Most of the coaches trained by the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission are teachers, who will be mentoring potential student-athletes to represent the province in various national tournaments.
The series of trainings is part of the province’s Grassroot Sports Development Program. The first was in July last year which was conducted simultaneously in different municipalities such as Badian and Dalaguete for the participants from the southern part.
Another training was conducted in Balamban for the western, while Liloan and Medellin served as the venues for the participants from the north.
“My co-trainers in table tennis were satisfied because we learned a lot of techniques from our resource speaker,” said coach Filjun Benlot, participant from Agbalanga Elementary School in Moalboal.
The sports program also enabled the province to discover new coaches and student-athletes for this year’s Batang Pinoy National Championship.
Last year, the province bagged 23 golds, 15 silvers, and 20 bronze medals, besting over 200 participating local government units around the country in the competition.
The Cebu Provincial Sports Commission has also organized sports tournaments along with some other sports organizations. These included the First Regional Flag Football Tournament, National Age Group Chess Championship and Dragon Boat Races. (FREEMAN)
