Teachers appeal to senators: Amend proposed salary law
CEBU, Philippines - The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition-Visayas has appealed to senators to amend the Salary Standardization Law 2015 (House Bill 6268).
The appeal was in consonance to the plea of 30,000 TDC members nationwide, reiterating a P10,000 increase in the present P18,549 monthly pay for the entry-level position of teachers.
The TDC’s letter of appeal was sent to all the senators except for the authors of the Senate version – Franklin Drilon and Loren Legarda. The letter is signed by TDC Secretary General Emmalyn Policarpio and TDC National Chair Benjo Basas.
“We appeal to your kind heart, patriotism and respect for the dignity of teachers and the working people by introducing amendments to this measure which the version in Senate was authored by Senate President Franklin Drilon and Senator Loren Legarda (SB 3009). Make this law more meaningful and responsive to the needs of our civil servants,” read the group statement sent to The FREEMAN.
“This is the best time to repair the erroneous compensation scheme for teachers. Past and present salary laws classified teachers as among the lowest paid government professionals,” it further read.
The group has been opposing the SSL 2015, which was approved by the Lower House in third and final reading on December 9.
The bill was immediately approved by the Committee on Appropriations on November 11, 2015 and was approved on second reading a day after.
TDC expressed dismay over the “insulting” measure that would grant teachers an increase of P523 for the first tranche by January and a total of P2,205 spread in a period of four years up to 2019. — (FREEMAN)
