Capitol recognizes psychologists of MB Kim-Nirvana B survivors

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu provincial government has recognized the volunteer psychologists who rendered trauma-healing sessions for survivors and bereaved families of the ill-fated MB Kim-Nirvana B that sank in the seawaters off Ormoc City earlier this year.

Plaques of appreciation were extended yesterday to 13 volunteers, four faculty members, and some intern students from the University of San Carlos by Governor Hilario Davide III and Provincial Board member Miguel Antonio Magpale.

Dr. Glenn Glavino, chairman of the Psychology Department of USC, said it was necessary to have the session with the survivors and the families of those who were killed in the accident, especially for those who experienced grief.

Last July 2, the passenger boat carrying more than 200 passengers and crewmembers on board, mostly from Camotes Island, sank 200 meters away from the Ormoc Port. It left 62 people killed while 158 survived.

Enrique Felisario II, representative of Board member Miguel Magpale, told the Freeman about how the collaboration with the volunteers was formed after their office recognized the need for psychological intervention for the survivors of the MB Nirvana mishap.

“The assessment found out that there are 21 people who have signs and symptoms of trauma. These 21 individuals are mostly survivors and some are the bereaved families,” said Felisario, head of the programs and advocacy division of Magpale’s office.

He said they conducted a two-phase session, for the survivors and the bereaved families.

According to Felisario, the first phase was the Psycho-Social Trauma Assessment conducted last September 1 and 2. It was followed by the Trauma-Healing Session last November 19 to 21, which they conducted with the help of the volunteers.

“We facilitate the partnership and we provided also the logistical support like the provision of transportation, meals, publication with the beneficiaries of LGUs (local government units),” he added. (FREEMAN)
