Truck kills girl, 12
CEBU, Philippines - A 12-year-old girl died after she was hit by a mini dump truck while walking along Barangay Daan Lungsod, Alcoy town last Saturday morning.
Artnielyn Mae Mosqueda was declared dead on arrival at Julio Cardinal Rosales Memorial Hospital in Dalaguete town while truck driver Agapito Altamera, 27, was apprehended by the police.
According to Police Officer 3 Rosendo Binondo of Alcoy Police Station, Mosqueda was walking home from a nearby store where she allegedly bought shampoo as asked by her sibling when she was hit by the truck.
Binondo said Altamera, a resident of Boljoon town, alleged that he did not notice the girl as the road was leading downhill.
“Apiki og modiritso og dulhog” Binondo said, quoting the driver.
The driver reportedly noticed that he hit someone and got off the truck to help the girl along with the residents in the area.
The child was rushed to the hospital in the nearby Dalaguete town but was declared dead on arrival.
The truck driver was brought to the police station but was soon released after the girl’s mother filed an affidavit of desistance.
He promised to shoulder the burial expenses of the child with the help of the operator of the truck.
In Barangay Bateria, Daanbantayan town, a 58-year-old man died after he was also hit by a motorcycle reportedly while crossing the road on Saturday afternoon.
Doctors said Tedilo Maluya died of hemorrhage secondary to the vehicular accident.
The victim, a resident of the barangay, was reportedly crossing the road at past 4 p.m. on Saturday when 28-year-old Christian Edem, who was driving a motorcycle, accidentally hit him.
The victim fell down and hit his head on the pavement resulting to hemorrhage.
He was brought to the town’s district hospital where he was declared dead minutes later.
Edem, a resident of Barangay Malbago, is currently under the custody of Daanbantayan Police Station while waiting for the decision of the family whether to pursue charges against him or not. (FREEMAN)
